German Annual Report Rating

Binational standards Switzerland-Germany

Companies and designers can benefit just as much from being given an award as from taking part in a competition which they do not win, always provided, of course, that praise and criticism are sufficiently well-founded to serve as learning material for the future.

In 2013, the German Designer Club (DDC) Rating for the first time worked with the rating catalogue of their Swiss colleagues under jury chairman Peter Vetter who do the Swiss Annual Report Rating to offer precisely this added value to both those at the top and the bottom of the table: an even better founded assessment of the centrepiece of their corporate communication activities.

The German jury can use the tried-and-tested Swiss criteria to improve the scope and transparency of the current rating system for the annual reports that are submitted as they force the judges to focus more sharply on the actual communication quality of a balance sheet. "Micro-engineering criteria" that distract the focus to the brand impact of an annual report are eliminated. In this way the DDC lives up to the adage that an excellent report should not only be well crafted, but should also harbour the potential to provide new impetus for its brand.

By working with Peter Vetter we have for the first time in Europe created binding cross-border standards of sufficient substance and credibility to provide companies and agencies with long-term benefits. For us this is the first step towards a "dream world" of European standards.

Personal information

Clemens Hilger has been rating balance sheets for the DDC as chairman of a four-person jury for the past three years. He himself has designed and produced more than 300 annual reports to date. "manager magazin"rates his agency Hilger & Boie Design among the top three in this field over the past 15 years. Traditionally, around 50 renowned German companies submit their annual reports for the DDC Rating. This heterogeneous field is characterised by a high degree of formative intent. As all balance sheets that are submitted are included in the rating, the final result is very meaningful and provides an analytical overview of the German annual report landscape that simplifies multi-year comparisons.
